Etiology & Risks

• Cause: Chronic overstimulation of gut cannabinoid receptors from heavy, long-term cannabis use.
• Risk Factors: Daily use for >1 year, onset before age 16, concurrent tobacco/substance use, male sex, and age group 16–34.

The Three Phases

1. Prodromal: Early morning nausea, mild abdominal discomfort. Can last months/years.
2. Hyperemetic: Severe, repeated vomiting (up to 5x/hour) and abdominal cramping. Characterized by temporary relief from hot showers or baths.
3. Recovery: Symptoms resolve within days to weeks after stopping cannabis completely; full recovery may take months.
